Keeping our babies’ bottoms comfortable can sometimes be a challenge. Whether they’re dealing with occasional irritation or persistent problems, choosing a great diaper rash cream is important. Here is a review of three of the most popular and effective options.
Winner: Aquaphor Review
Aquaphor Healing Ointment is a petroleum based, safe, and hypoallergenic multi-use product. Aquaphor’s active ingredient is 41% petrolatum, which creates a breathable barrier that allows baby’s skin to heal while protecting it from wetness and irritation and trapping in the skin’s own soothing moisture. This barrier allows baby’s skin to repair and grow under a protective layer. Aquaphor’s active ingredient is considered safe and is used in many over the counter products, including most other diaper creams.
Aquaphor is reasonably priced, comes in large tubs for economy and tubes for hygiene or convenience. One advantage of this product is that it is great for sensitive skin, including eczema â and it can be used on just about any part of the body to relive dry skin, chapped lips, or cracked feet. It can also be used on minor cuts and scrapes to aid in faster healing. These multiple uses makes Aquaphor a great all-around purchase, not just for diaper rash.

Runner Up: Boudreaux’s Butt Paste Review
Along with a funny name, Boudreaux’s Butt Paste offers a wide variety of formulas that can be found in just about any drug store and at many online retailers. Boudreaux’s Butt Paste, which was developed by a pharmacist and dad of four, boasts being free of dyes, parabens, preservatives, phthalates, and talc. The paste has a light scent, and the active ingredient in the original formula is 16% zinc oxide. Zinc oxide safely provides a barrier between baby’s skin and the outside irritants and moisture that cause diaper rash.
Zinc oxide creams work for more stubborn rashes, and Boudreaux’s comes in Original, Maximum Strength (which boasts 40% zinc oxide for tough rashes), and Natural formulas in both tubs and tubes. Boudreaux’s Butt Paste Natural formula is petrolatum free and includes Aloe Vera in its formula. Like other zinc oxide creams, Boudreaux’s is a little thicker than Aquaphor, which also means it provides a slightly longer lasting barrier, but is also harder to wipe off. Boudreaux’s will tackle more persistent problems, and provides a longer lasting barrier, but it does so at a higher price. And, while good for diaper rash, Boudreaux’s Butt Paste is less versatile than Aquaphor, since it isn’t meant to be used to moisturize multiple places on the body.
Honorable Mention: Desitin Review
Desitin has been on the market for years and is a tried and true, trusted product that has been a staple of parents for generations. Desitin Rapid Relief is another zinc oxide based cream. It is hypoallergenic and comes fragrance free, unlike some of the other formulas. Desitin Rapid Relief has 13% zinc oxide, while the Maximum Strength formula works well for tough or persistent rashes with 40% active ingredient.
Desitin is white in color and, as with other creams, the higher the level of zinc oxide, the thicker and stickier the paste will be. This is beneficial to provide a longer-lasting barrier to moisture, but also makes wiping it off much more difficult. Desitin comes in at a slightly lower price than most other products, has been a trusted product for years, and is easily found at almost any brick and mortar or online retailer. Desitin is good for diaper rashes, but, like Boudreaux’s, is also not a versatile moisturizer.
Diaper Rash Cream Conclusion: Boudreaux’s Butt Paste vs Desitin vs Aquaphor
Overall, most diaper rash creams come in either a petrolatum or zinc oxide based formula. Either will do the trick depending on your baby’s needs, but if you want a versatile cream to prevent and treat minor diaper rash, especially on sensitive skin, Aquaphor is a great choice. If you are looking to treat a more persistent or severe rash, a zinc oxide cream may be a better option for your baby’s bottom (also consider Pampers Baby-Dry Diapers). Boudreaux’s offers a good variety of options for parents concerned about the ingredients found in their creams, while Desitin provides great results at a reasonable price.
